The Albatross

Until yesterday, I knew only of the albatross from the "The Rime of the Ancient Mariner". This Samuel Taylor Coleridge poem tells of a man who shot an albatross(a bird of good omen) for sport and was forced to wear it around his neck as punishment. Believe me when I say this; that story is still relevant today. The many species of this great seabird are on the endangered species list. They are a victim of yet another of man's frailties. Stupidity by reason of ignorance. These animals are fairly long lived some live as long as 50 years, the male/ female pairs are faithfull to one another and they only produce one egg. They are dying needlessly and mankind is responsible. Alas, one reason strikes me personally and that is the fact that the "Goony Bird" as they are sometimes called, is threatened from consuming plastic. I work in plastics for many years so in a sense I could be the man wearing the Albatross around my neck. I feel my part has some relevance for it is the albatross that has payed the price. Once again for being curious, and once again man is to blame. Now I see the Albatross as a beautiful, gracefull, and innocent creature. As for me I carry yet another regret and burden of wishing I had a better job.

The Spider

Recently, I thought about the spider. It builds an invisible web to trap unsuspecting prey, so that it can capture them. Once captured, the spider salivates at the sight of its prey struggling, for the prey by itself doesn't satisfy as much as a prey that has fallen. The prey is apprehended, bitten, paralyzed, and finally, the spider sucks the life out of them. It is cruel and merciless by nature, but, it is the business of the spider. Does this make the spider a villain? No. He is just trying to make a living. Humans that use the business of the spider to instantly get what they want from other humans are spiders too. Villain? You make the call.

I Stood Alone And Watched The Chaos

Today I tried to find solid ground so I would not lose my footing. I stood alone and watched the chaos. What else could I do? My time was in the here and now. I could not see past the past and couldn't focus on the future. So, I paused for a moment and looked at what was happening in the present. I just didn't get it. If it had made sense in the first place, why was I standing here dumbfounded? No matter how much time I spend trying to figure it out, it won't change anything. So, I decided doing something was better than doing nothing for I have seen too much of nothing already.
